Tanuja's father Kumarsen Samarth was a poet and film director and her mother Shobhana Samarth was a famous actress. Tanuja started her cine career as a child artist in the year 1950 with her mother's home production film 'Hamari Beti' (1950). Tanuja's elder sister Nutan also made her debut as an actress with this film. At the age of 13, Tanuja went to Switzerland to study where she also learned English, French and German languages.

Tanuja's husband Shomu Mukherjee died of a heart attack at the age of 64. He died on 10 April 2008.
