The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking a direction to the Center to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each to the kin of lawyers below the age of 60 who lost their lives due to COVID-19 or any other reason. The court said that it cannot be said that the life of lawyers is more valuable than other people.
A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud said it cannot encourage the filing of fake PILs by lawyers. The bench asked the petitioner advocate, are other people of the society not important. This is a publicity interest litigation, if you are wearing a black coat, it does not mean that your life is more valuable than other people's. We should not induce lawyers to file fake PILs.
Many people died due to Covid-19 in the country and the apex court has already given a decision regarding the framing of guidelines regarding the distribution of compensation to the families of those who have died. The bench dismissed the petition and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the petitioner. The bench has directed the lawyer to deposit the fine amount with the Supreme Court Bar Association within a week.
