Air Force officer accused of sexual harassment with female personnel in Coimbatore, arrested

A flight lieutenant of the Indian Air Force (IAF) College at Redfields in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu has been arrested for sexually assaulting a female IAF officer two weeks ago. A complaint was lodged on behalf of the victim in the women's police station. The victim said that she was sexually assaulted at the Air Force Administrative College where she lived. After this, the Mahila police station registered a case under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and taking action today arrested the accused Flight Lieutenant, who is a resident of Chhattisgarh.
Confirming the arrest, defense sources said that the Indian Air Force has offered its full cooperation to the Coimbatore police in the investigation. "A departmental inquiry committee has been constituted to probe the matter," the sources said.

The woman IAF officer contacted the Coimbatore city police commissioner and told him that she was not satisfied with the investigation conducted by the IAF officials on her complaint. It was not immediately known when and where the alleged incident took place.

After preliminary investigation, the police produced the accused at the residence of a judge, his lawyer raised the issue of jurisdiction. The lawyer said in an affidavit that the Coimbatore Police does not have the authority to investigate against an IAF personnel and it should be tried in a defense court.
