Same sex couples will now be able to get married in Switzerland, approval for marriage in plebiscite

Switzerland's voters on Sunday voted by a large majority to allow same-sex couples to marry, joining the ranks of countries that grant gay rights like many other countries in Western Europe. Official results show that 64.1 percent of voters in all 26 cantons or states of Switzerland voted in favor of it.

Switzerland's parliament and the governing body, the Federal Council, supported the decision of 'marriage for all'. Switzerland has given same-sex people the right to live together since 2007. Supporters said the move would allow same-sex couples to have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples. This includes allowing them to adopt children together and facilitating citizenship for same-sex spouses. It would also allow gay couples to access regulated sperm donation.

On the other hand, opponents believe that the right to convert the decision to live together into a full-fledged marriage would jeopardize the family structure based on amalgamation of men and women. Voter Anna Limgruber on Sunday at a polling station in Geneva said she voted against it because she believes "children will need a father and a mother."

However, Nicolas Dzierlatka said he voted in support. He acknowledged that same-sex marriage is against the so-called tradition. He said, 'I think the important thing for children is to be loved and respected, I think there are children who do not get respect or love in so called opposite couples. Switzerland has a population of 8.5 million, it is traditionally conservative and in 1990 all women in the country were given the right to vote.
