UPSC Civil Services Result 2020: After 19 years, UPSC topper came out of Bihar again, Nitish congratulated Shubham

Shubham Kumar, a resident of Katihar, Bihar, has secured the top rank in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2020. Prior to this, Alok Ranjan Jha of Bihar had topped the UPSC in the year 2001. Jagriti Awasthi and Ankita Jain have secured second and third position respectively.


This time many students of Bihar have made their place in the top rank. Praveen Kumar of Jamui district got 7th rank, Satyam Gandhi of Samastipur got 10th rank, Anil Basak of Kishanganj got 45th rank, Ashish Mishra of Purnia got 52nd rank. Shubham, Praveen, Anil and Ashish are all IITians. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has congratulated Shubham by tweeting on this stupendous success.

UPSC topper Shubham hails from Kumhari village in Kadwa block of Katihar district. He did his IAS preparation from Kadwa at Vidya Vihar School in Purnea and later from IIT, Pune. His father Devanand Singh is a branch manager in Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank in Purnia. Last year also, Shubham had cleared the civil services examination but got 290 rank. He was not satisfied with this and by re-appearing in the examination, securing the highest position, illuminated the name of Bihar across the country.

Madhya Pradesh cadre wants Shubham

After the results were announced, Shubham said that in the last few years a lot of changes have taken place in Bihar. Work is being done in every field, but my first choice is Madhya Pradesh cadre. Shubham's father Devanand Singh said that when I was coming down the stairs doing duty from the bank, during that time his call came. Shubham said – I have topped UPSC, so I could not believe my ears. I asked again - what is the rank, then he said that I have topped. I got emotional after hearing this, while Shubham also got teary-eyed on the phone. The wish of Shubham's grandparents has been fulfilled today. Shubham has worked hard day and night. I gave my everything to get him to this point. Today is the result of that.


Ramnath Mishra, Regional Manager of Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank, says that Shubham started preparing for IAS after passing IIT. Devanand Singh said that Shubham's hard work has made him successful. He said that it is definitely a matter of pride to be a topper. Shubham's mother Poonam Devi is a housewife. Since the results are out, there is an influx of people congratulating his house.

Topper from Bihar after 19 years

Earlier in the year 2001, Alok Ranjan Jha became the topper, while in 1997 Sunil Kumar Barnwal of Gaya had topped. In 1987, it was topped by Amir Subhani, who is now the development commissioner of Bihar. So far, four meritorious candidates from Bihar have topped the UPSC. Explain that UPSC conducts civil services examinations every year in three phases, which include preliminary examination, main examination and interview. Through these exams, candidates are selected for various other services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS).

Chakai's Praveen got seventh rank

Praveen Kumar, who got the seventh rank in UPSC, hails from Chakai in Jamui district. A passout from IIT Kanpur, Praveen was selected for the Indian Railways service in 2018. Currently his training is going on in Vadodara. Praveen told Hindustan, “I wanted to do something good for the society. There was a desire to become an IAS to do better work at the grassroots level. This was the reason that he worked hard to get into the civil service. Good luck that the ranking also came out great. Satisfaction that hard work is met with luck."

Praveen's father Sitaram Varnwal runs a drugstore. He said that Praveen was brilliant since childhood. Received early education from Ramakrishna Mission of Jasidih. After doing matriculation and inter from CBSE, he did engineering from IIT Kanpur. Got success in second attempt in Civil Services. Mother Veena Varnwal, elder brother Dhananjay Varnwal, sister Diksha Varnwal, uncle Rameshwar Lal Varnwal are feeling proud of Praveen's success.
Anil succeeded by beating the financial difficulties

Anil Basak, a resident of Nepalgarh Colony of Kishanganj city, has got 45th rank. This was Anil's third attempt. Got 616th rank in second attempt. Anil's father Binod Basak used to sell clothes from village to village. Anil is the second among four brothers. The financial condition of Anil's father was not such that he would have appeared in the prestigious UPSC examination of the country. Even after the financial situation worsened, Anil Basak did not give up.

Anil Basak told that his father, Subhash Verma sir and Jaishankar sir inspired him to prepare for UPSC. Anil completed his studies up to class VIII from Oriental Public School, Kishanganj city, Matriculation from Araria Public School in the year 2011, 12th from Bal Mandir Senior Secondary School, Kishanganj. Anil told over phone that he had succeeded in the second attempt, but he tried and succeeded this year for an even better rank. With sincere dedication and sincere effort, success is achieved in every situation.
Ashish got success in second attempt

Ashish Kumar Mishra, who stood 52nd, has cracked the UPSC exam for the second time. He was not selected after the interview in the first attempt. Ashish Kumar Mishra has a bright career after Don Bosco School and then completed his IIT degree from BHU after passing 12th from Millia Convent. As soon as the news of Ashish Kumar Mishra's success was received, there was a wave of happiness in his family as well as in the surrounding locality. Everyone is appreciating Ashish's dedication towards studies.
