America's first black former Secretary of State Colin Powell dies due to Covid complication

Colin Powell, former United States of America Secretary of State and former chairman of the 'Joint Chiefs', died due to complications related to Covid-19. This information was given by his family on Monday. He was 84 years old. Powell became the first black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989. In that role he commanded the US invasion of Panama and later the United States of America invasion of Kuwait in 1991 to drive out Iraqi forces.

His reputation, however, suffered a setback when Powell appeared before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in 2003 and defended the United States of America war against Iraq. He claimed, citing misinformation, that Saddam Hussein had secretly concealed weapons of mass destruction. He told the world body that Iraq's claim of no weapons is a "web of lies". In an announcement on social media, the family said that Powell had been fully vaccinated.

The family said, 'We have lost a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.' Former President George W Bush said he and former First Lady Laura Bush were "deeply saddened" by the death of Powell.

Bush said, 'He was a great public servant and was widely respected at home and abroad.' He added, 'And most importantly, Colin was a family man and friend. Laura and I send our sincere condolences to Alma and her children remembering the life of a great man.'
